F.A.Q.
Here are the most common questions we receive from our customers. If you don't see the answer to your question here please contact us and we'll be happy to help. Please note that we prefer to be contacted by phone regarding technical questions, tuning help, pricing, equipment recommendation, Etc. These type of questions can be answered much quicker and easier via phone rather than long, detailed messages.
Q: How much do bows cost?
A: We get this question a lot and it's a difficult one to answer. Bows can start at as low as $45 for a fiberglass youth bow, whereas a high end hunting or competition bow can easily cost thousands of dollars once you add all your accessories. Prices can be anywhere in between those two extremes.
We often compare bows to instruments; you can buy a $100 guitar package at Wal-Mart or spend $1000 or more in a music store and there are many reasons for that price difference. Typically we ask people to tell us their intended use for the bow and give us a maximum budget before we start making recommendations. Are you looking to hunt with it, do you just want to do some target practice, or do you want to do both? Depending on that, and a number of other factors such as age, height, strength, etc., there could be dozens of options to choose from. By providing us with as much information as possible and a price range we can shorten the list to help you make the best choice for you!
After reading this please message us with as much of the following information to help us provide you with some options.
-Are you looking for a compound or recurve?
-What is your dominant hand and eye?
-What is your draw length if known. If not how tall are you?
-Are you looking for something for target shooting, hunting or both?
-On a scale of 1 - 10 how would you rate your strength (1 physical injury limitations - 10 strong as a bull)
-What's your max budget? This does not mean we will aim to spend that entire budget.
Q: Do you sight in bow or crossbows?
A: We can certainly sight in crossbows but bows are a bit different. Due to differences in individual draw lengths and shooting styles it is best for the bow to be sighted in by the person it is set up for. The best option is to book a 1 hour private lesson and we'll assist you in getting your bow sight in.
Q: Do you setup bow and tune them?
A: Yes, all bows bought in house are setup, timed and paper tuned free of charge. There is a fee for bows bought elsewhere.
Q: Do you buy, sell or trade used bows?
A: Unfortunately we no longer buy, sell or accept any trades on used bows.
Q: What are your hours?
A: At the moment we are not open for regular business hours. Arrow Addiction is currently a side business for us. Customers will need an appointment to come by to browse our inventory or avail of our services. We apologize for this inconvenience this may cause.
Q: What are the age requirements for lessons/how much do lessons cost?
A: Age limits are generally 10 years and up but in certain situations we can accommodate as young as 6 years old. Please visit our lessons section for a more detailed explanation and the associated costs.
Q: Do I need a firearms license or any other specialized permits/training to purchase a bow or crossbow?
A: At the moment there is no requirement to have a firearms license and there is still no bow hunting course required to purchase a bow in Newfoundland. However, you must be 18 years of age to purchase a crossbow. Anyone under the age of 18 will require a parent or guardian be present at the time of purchase.
Q: What does dry firing mean and how will it affect my bow/crossbow?
A: Dry firing refers to discharging a bow or crossbow without an arrow present. This will result in the catastrophic failure of the bow/crossbow and may result in serious injury or death of the user. As a rule of thumb we always tell people never pull a bow back without an arrow or a safe direction for that arrow to go if fired.
Q: Can crossbows be used during the 2 week archery season in Newfoundland?
A: No! Crossbows may only be used in the regular firearms season and are not permitted in the 2 week archery only seasons.
Q: What is the minimum draw weight requirements to hunt with a bow in Newfoundland?
A: For vertical bows there is a minimum draw weight requirement of 22# for small game and 44# for big game.
For crossbows their is a minimum draw weight requirement of 150# of draw weight regardless of the species being hunted.
